What is Chiropractic?
As you know, your nervous system consists of a brain,
spinal cord and millions of nerve cells, which are supported and protected by
your skull and spinal vertebrae. The nerve control everything, from
muscle movement to organ functions. Through many everyday activities your spinal
vertebrae may lose their normal position or motion which results in nervous
system dysfunction. When this happens, you usually feel pain. Chiropractic philosophy believes that pain, systemic dysfunction, and
disease may result from joint distortion and a lack of normal nerve function
that can be corrected through effective manipulation techniques, physiotherapy
and specific adjustments of the body structure.
What is a Chiropractor?
A chiropractor is a physician who practices the manipulation sciences
utilizing many specialized procedures. Our doctors are also therapy
specialists. There are many methods employed to properly diagnosis and treat
specific pain. Our doctors use several specific advanced techniques and
therapies to aid them in the pursuit of alleviating pain and promoting good
health.
Patients often do not fully recover from injuries, if the injury did
not receive treatment or only received conventional medicine. Typical injuries
are whiplash from auto accidents, work related sprains/strains, falls, and heavy
lifting injuries. If these injuries are left untreated correctly, or treated
incorrectly, they may
slowly deteriorate or reoccur down the road.
Perhaps you feel you are in good health, but you suffer from headaches. Pain
medications only cover up the symptoms. While pinched nerves of your neck area
may continue to deteriorate. When this happens, the same medications may no
longer be effective, and you may be heading the road of surgery.
Only a chiropractor is trained to analyze your spine for vertebral distortion
that damages the nerves. In many cases, chiropractic care may help by providing
effective treatment for pain relief and proper healing safely, and quickly,
without drugs or surgery.
What is a Chiropractic Orthopedist?
A Chiropractic
Orthopedist is a chiropractic physician, who has years of additional
extensive, specialized training in examination and treatment procedures
emphasizing primarily the neuromusculoskeletal structures of the body
including the spine and the extremity joints as well as the related soft
tissues. This involves conditions affecting bones, joints, muscles,
tendons, ligaments, cartilage and related nerve structures. It is a
“Specialty”.
In an advanced level, the Chiropractic Orthopedist handles both acute health
problems such as sports, occupational and other injuries, as well as more
chronic conditions including arthritis, scoliosis, and fibromyalgia using
advanced procedures of x-ray, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed
tomography imaging (CT), electrodiagnostic - studies (EMG, nerve conduction)
and clinical laboratory procedures to assist in the diagnostic process.
In the course of treatment, the Chiropractic Orthopedist applies
manipulative / adjustive procedures along with other treatment options such
as physiologic therapeutics, nutrition, structural supports, corrective
devices, exercise and rehabilitation regimens, preventive care advice and
home therapy programs for patient wellness. The Chiropractic
Orthopedist focuses his / her practice primarily on the neuromusculoskeletal
structures, and remains abreast of the latest research and developments
through continuing education, by attendance at chiropractic orthopedic
conventions and seminars. For example: in case of sports injury, a
Chiropractic Orthopedist offers more in depth diagnostic and treatment, even
casting a fracture, if needed.
What does a Chiropractor Treat?

How qualified is a Chiropractic Physician?
After completing an undergraduate degree, Chiropractic
Doctors continue with another four years of postgraduate medical school. After
graduation they are required to pass all levels of a rigorous National Board
Examination. Then, in order to practice, they must meet stringent Ohio State
Board Examination and licensing requirements.
To keep up with the latest research and remain current in their field, Ohio
chiropractic doctors are required to attend 1 continuing education class per year. Our doctors and staff attend many
seminars per year to enable them to deliver the most advanced practices to
our patients. Dr. Lok currently is in a (3 1/2 years) Advance Orthopedic
Training.
What should you expect on your First Visit?
On your first visit you will be warmly greeted and asked
to fill out some forms, which will help us, gain information about you so we may
better understand your condition.
Our doctors will then talk with you and ask you some questions about your past
medical history and the nature and onset of your condition. If our doctors feels
you can be helped, a thorough chiropractic examination will be given. Our
doctors
may refer you to a specialist who may be of assistance. Nothing can be
done in this clinic without your consent.
Following your consultation, the chiropractic examination will consist of
analysis of the muscular, skeletal and systemic components of your body.
Measurements in ranges of motion, reflexes, vital signs, Orthopedic and
neurological tests as well as a thorough examination of injured regions or areas
of concern are completed. There are times when a patient may require an X-ray, which
will be taken in house.
Once doctors have obtained all the information needed, our doctor will give you a
report of our findings and recommend an appropriate treatment plan.
What is our Chiropractic Philosophy?
Our chiropractors use highly multi specialized hands-on healing techniques,
which assist your spine, central nervous system, and allow your body to heal
naturally. Each technique is geared toward patient size, age, gender and
injury severity. Chiropractic care helps you return to optimum health by
restoring and maintaining nerve and joint function. Then we rebuild your muscles
and ligaments to be stronger so you may avoid future reoccurrences. The end result? You
are healthier in the long run, allowing you to live life to the fullest
once again.
Can I see a Medical Doctor too?
Absolutely. We refer our patients to Specialists, ER or their family MD. Different doctors have different roles. We believe PATIENT’S HEALTH
COMES FIRST. It is unethical to put a physician’s pride in front of a patient’s health. As
a chiropractic physician, our job is to take good care of the root cause of
a problem and provide for a return to long term
health. The Mission Statement of Mid-Ohio Chiropractic is “Helping people”.
